From Darren’s Patch

May is one of my absolute favourite months in the garden. There’s a real promise in the air – longer days, warmer soil, and plants leaping into growth. It’s the perfect time to go big with sowing! I love scattering seeds of cheerful sunflowers along the back fence and tucking in some sweet peas near the shed where I’ll catch their scent every time I pass. I always make room for marigolds too – not just for their bold colour but because they’re great at keeping pests in check. If you’re feeling adventurous, try something like love-lies-bleeding or Himalayan poppy – they add a bit of drama! Whether it’s a quick-win annual or a perennial for seasons to come, sowing in May brings joy now and anticipation for later. It’s a month that makes you fall in love with gardening all over again.
